Choosing the Right Dehumidifier

Moisture-Removal Capacity

Dehumidifier capacity is normally expressed in pints of water removed during 24 hours under specified test conditions. More severe moisture problems generally require more capacity.

Room Conditions Matter

Square footage is only part of the sizing decision. A mildly humid living room and a persistently damp basement of the same size can require very different dehumidifiers.

Continuous Drainage

Frequently used dehumidifiers are easier to manage when collected water can drain continuously instead of relying entirely on a removable bucket.

Gravity Drain vs Built-In Pump

Gravity drainage is simple when the drain is below the appliance. A built-in pump becomes useful when collected water needs to travel upward toward an appropriate discharge point.

Automatic Defrost

Cooler basements and crawl spaces can make automatic defrost more important because frost can form on the evaporator coil. Always stay within the manufacturer’s specified operating-temperature range.

Energy Efficiency

Efficiency matters when a dehumidifier operates for long periods. Compare energy-efficiency information only after choosing enough capacity for the actual moisture load.

Humidistat and Automatic Operation

An adjustable humidistat allows the appliance to cycle according to a humidity target instead of simply operating continuously.

Basement Use

Basements often benefit from additional capacity, continuous drainage, automatic restart, automatic defrost, and easy filter access because the appliance may operate for long periods with limited supervision.
